The Practice of Change

Most of us spend a great deal of our lives trying to keep things exactly as they are. We build comfortable routines and lean on familiar faces because there is a certain safety in knowing what tomorrow will bring. Yet, if we look at the world around us, we see that nature never actually stands still. The seasons turn, the trees grow, and even the stars are in a state of constant motion. It seems that the more we resist this natural flow, the more tired we become.

I have spent many afternoons in my library thinking about why we find transition so difficult. In my studies of history and liturgy, I noticed that humans have always created rituals to help them cross the threshold from the old to the new. Change isn’t just something that happens to us; it is a skill we can practice. When we stop viewing it as a threat and start seeing it as a teacher, our perspective shifts entirely. That is the central idea behind my new book, “The Practice of Change.”

I spent years trying to hold back the tide with a plastic spoon. I remember sitting in my old study, gripping a fountain pen and refusing to use a computer because I liked the “old way” of doing things. I thought I was preserving my dignity, but I was really just becoming a relic. We often fear that change will take away who we are, when in reality, it is the only process that can actually show us who we are meant to be.

The Practice of Change is an invitation to stop bracing for impact and start learning how to dance with the inevitable.

Chapter 1: Become The Change You Really Want to See
The revolution starts in your own living room. I learned that when I stopped grumbling about the neighborhood and started picking up the litter on my own sidewalk, the view changed instantly.

Chapter 2: The Best Strategies for Handling Change
When the floor falls out from under you, you need more than just a deep breath. We’ll look at how to find a “steady point” to look at when your circumstances start spinning.

Chapter 3: Positive Change’s Power
Choosing to move forward creates a momentum that fear cannot touch. One intentional decision to try a new path can spark a chain reaction of light in a dark season.

Chapter 4: You Can Impact Change on People Around You
You don’t need a megaphone to influence others. I’ve noticed that when I change my own tone during a heated argument, the person across from me almost always starts to soften theirs.

Chapter 5: How To Change Your Life for The Better
Transformation isn’t about a massive overhaul; it’s about honest adjustments. It is the difference between trying to move a mountain and simply moving the stones in your way.

Chapter 6: You Have the Ability to Transform Your Life
I spent years feeling like a passenger until I realized I was the one holding the wheel. This is a quiet reminder of your inherent power to change your direction at any moment.

Chapter 7: Seven Easy Exercises to Improve Your Life
I’ve put together seven simple, daily chores for the soul. These small rituals, like a morning walk or a moment of silence, build the foundation for a much larger shift.

Chapter 8: Growth Comes from Change
A seed cannot stay a seed if it wants to be a tree. We will look deep into the necessary discomfort of outgrowing your old self so you can begin to reach for the sun.

Chapter 9: The Only Thing That Is Constant in Life Is Change
Nothing ever stays exactly the same forever. There is a deep peace that comes from finally accepting this law of nature instead of exhausted yourself fighting it.

Chapter 10: The Only Way to Stay Ahead Is Through Change
Stagnation is the real enemy of a good life. We look at how being flexible and willing to learn allows you to thrive even when the landscape shifts.

Chapter 11: You Might Need to Change Your Habits in Order to Succeed
Your current results are just the fruit of your current habits. This chapter helps you look at your daily routine to see which old branches need pruning.

Chapter 12: Managing Change in The Workplace
The office can be a storm of shifting priorities. I’ll show you how to maintain your integrity and your focus when the professional world gets chaotic.

Chapter 13: Five Ways Your Life Can Be Improved by Change
From better health to new friendships, change brings gifts we didn’t know we were missing. We look at five specific benefits that only come when you stop saying “no.”

Chapter 14: How To Handle Relationship Change
People grow at different speeds, and that can be frightening. We talk about navigating the shifting tides of marriage and friendship with honesty and grace.

Chapter 15: Accepting Change Leads to Transformation
When you stop resisting, you start becoming. We conclude by looking at how acceptance is the final key that turns a scary change into a beautiful evolution.

The only way to find out what you are capable of is to let go of who you used to be.
